Hellboy ll: The Golden Army (action)
Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair
Direction: Guillermo Del Toro
He’s six feet five inches tall, red in colour, sports a tail, is mostly angry, has a love interest, was born in a Nazi-sponsored petri dish, but now works for the US government as the reluctant superhero in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence.
That’s the comic book hero Hellboy for you, who has his second outing under Guillermo Del Toro’s creative expertise, and ends up better than his first avtar. Del Toro had already grabbed eyeballs with his visually innovative film, Pan’s Labyrinth, which created enough buzz at the Oscars. Here, his fascination for the supra-normal, the bizarre and the beyond-imagination creatures gets free flow, as he sculpts the immortal good versus evil clash with an outlandish superguy and a horde of trolls, elves, goblins.
Hellboy’s army comprises his pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), his fishman buddy, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and the ectoplasmic rookie, Johann Kraus (James Donn). The bunch of brave weirdoes are out to quell the Golden Army: swarming hordes of killing machines led by the evil elf, Prince Nuada (Luke Gross) who dreams of world domination.
Get dizzy on the special effects and the unbounded creativity of a director who blends the aesthetics and the mythology of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings with Japanese manga
